I have horrible taste in music, probably because I spent 5 years without a radio and only listened to 80s New Wave hits during that time. Know my man, Phil Collins so well I was considering a sleeve tattoo that just said "SUSSUIDO" in gothic script, but I had no idea Usher's "Love in this Club" came out until a year after it did. I had heard it in a American Café in Florence, Italy, and then spend the next 3 months softly singing it on my morning commute with a bunch of old Catholic ladies.
"Might as well give me a kiss, if we keep touching like this...I know you're scared baby, they don't know what we're doing..." Good thing they didn't speak English.
But anyway, I have my friends to thank for the maybe ten good songs I know, and this is my way of thanking them now....even though they don't even read this. But their subconscious will probably catch wind somehow...maybe.
10. "This Heart is a Stone" Acid House Kings, Sing Along with the Acid House Kings
TJ from Freshman Year in a Birthday Facebook Post
"They say they can smell the drama, but I know it's No. 5..."
I don't think this is the actual video, but it's a group of long-haired, possibly Swedish men (+1 woman) playing a rousing game of table tennis. Coincidentally, Acid House Kings themselves ARE long-haired Swedish men who are good at table tennis. And if you're not into that, you should probably just stop reading this blog all together.
I never really talked to TJ again, but his memory remains in this lovely upbeat song.
9. "Pursuit of Happiness" Lissie (Kid Cudi cover)
Guy Germaine from B&N in the Self-Improvement Section
Guy Germaine from B&N in the Self-Improvement Section
"People told me slow my roll, I'm screaming out, "Fuck that!" Imma do just what I want, and there ain't no turnin' back."
Stop everything you're doing and buy her album. She's easily the best thing out today, and she rocks THE FUCK out of this Kid Cudi song. Every cover of hers is almost better than the whole thing (save for Fleetwood Mac, because Lindsay Buckingham's afro is the best thing to come out of the 20th century, sorry Henry Ford.), and her original songs perfect for long car rides. I know this because I lost my voice singing her in the car the other day, because I think I have the vocal range of Beyonce, when I in fact have none at all.
Guy Germaine is the coolest B&N worker ever, who someone thought I was fun enough to hang out with. I don't understand it either. Really good hockey player too, at least that's what his coach Gordon told me.

8. "Amsterdam" Jacques Brel, Enregistrement Public à l'Olympia 1964
French professor Christophe, Senior Year
"Dans le port d'Amsterdam y a des marins qui boivent. Et qui boivent et reboivent et qui reboivent encore."
Jacques Brel, oh man. He reminds me of a young James Coburn (seriously google that shit) and SHIT GOES DOWN at the end of this song. If you know French, it's pretty intense...if you don't, you can just freaking tell. The man practically has a stroke in the last verse, just watch.
Christophe was my French professor, and I was slightly in love with him. He definitely knew, but I definitely don't care. He dressed better than 100% of the men I knew, and his hair was fluffy. Pretty much my weakness right there.

7. "Ima Read" Zebra Katz
Helene, my Melville friend, describing her life as a PhD student
"First period don't give a fuck, second period gonna get cut. Lunchtime, feed that bitch, like a slaughterhouse I'll bleed that bitch...class president, Imma lead that bitch."
Two things you need to know: 1. This song will be the greatest song you've ever heard. 2. This video is the scariest video you will ever see. That is all.
Helene is the love of my life, and is the only person who understands my love for Lana Del Rey, which I don't even understand. She is my Melville soulmate, and one day we will buy a boat together and eat lots of burritos.

PART II will be up soon, when I get around to it. I had a pizza dinner I had to attend tonight, and I took up a significant amount of my night stuffing my face. Waking up at 5am sucks.
